Anorectal Manometry is a diagnostic test which is performed to measure the how the anal and rectum sphincters and muscles are working. The appropriate functioning of anal and rectal sphincters is required for the smooth bowel movements. Though the name sounds complicated, anorectal manometry is a rather safe procedure and is performed on outpatient basis in a hospital or a healthcare facility.
When is an anorectal manometry test advised ?
The anorectal manometry test is advised in individuals who are facing issues in their gastrointestinal system particularly the movement of bowel. The test is advised in individual who frequently face the problem of constipation (difficulty in bowel movement, less than three bowel movements in a week’s time is clinical constipation), fecal incontinence (inability to hold feces resulting in leakage of feces) and a disease called as Hirschsprung’s disease which commonly causes intestinal obstruction in children.
How do you prepare for an anorectal manometry test ?
The test is performed in a gastrointestinal unit as an outpatient procedure. The treating doctor will advise you not eat or drink anything a night before the test is scheduled to keep your bowels empty. The doctor will also advise you to take enema 2-3 hours before the procedure. It is also advised that you inform your doctor if you are on any medication as some medicines can interfere with the test and its results.
Is the anorectal manometry test performed under anesthesia ?
No, the test is performed without the administration of anesthesia or sedation.
What happens during an anorectal manometry test ?
The treating doctor and technician will ask you to change into hospital gown, lie down on an examination table on your side, with your knees folded. A flexible tube (catheter) with a fitted balloon at the end. Once you are comfortable, the doctor or the technician will insert the flexible tube with the balloon end, you will also be asked to relax and tense your rectal muscles when the tube is inserted. Once the tube is in place the balloon is inflated slightly and the pressure recording are taken on a monitor which is attached to the flexible tube. The entire procure takes about 30-40 minutes.
Who interprets the anorectal manometry test results ?
The results of anal manometry are interpreted by your treating doctor, or by doctor who advised the test) after the test is completed and if any abnormalities are found you may be suggested diet modifications, surgical procedure to correct the anal and rectal muscles, strengthening exercises for muscles and medications.
Are there any risks associated with anorectal manometry test ?
No, anal manometry is a safe procedure and is usually painless too. If you experience discomfort during the procedure it is advised that you inform your treating doctor about it.
