Embolectomy is the urgent surgical removal of emboli which are jamming the flow of blood circulation. An embolism is when an embolus, or a blockage-causing piece of material, gets stuck in a blood vessel. The embolus can vary and may be anything from a blood clot (thrombus), to a fat globule (fat embolism), to a bubble of air or other gases (gas embolism), or any foreign material. Embolectomy usually deals with removal of thrombi (or blood clots), and it is then called as thrombectomy. Embolectomy most of the times, is done as an urgent procedure because lasting bloackage of major blood flow to an organ leads to organ death or necrosis. Other significant therapeutic options are use of anticoagulants and thrombolysis.
What are the types of embolectomy ?
1) Catheter embolectomy
- Balloon embolectomy : A Balloon Embolectomy is a procedure in which a specialized catheter with a balloon at its tip will be inserted into an artery either in the arm or groin. Once it reaches the emboli, the balloon is inflated; the artery is cleared of emboli and then both catheter and balloon are removed also via the same route. The catheter is known as Fogarty, named so after its inventor Thomas J.Fogarty. The probable complications of balloon embolectomy are intimal lesions in the blood vessel, which may lead to other thrombosis.
- Aspiration embolectomy : This is the second type of catheter embolectomy, wherein the thrombus is detached by suction rather than by pushing it through with a balloon. It is a swift and effective way of surgically removing thrombi in thromboembolic occlusions of the leg arteries particularly in leg infarction.
2) Surgical embolectomy
In surgical embolectomy, as the name suggests, straightforward surgical removal of a clot is done by direct surgery on the artery itself following an open surgical incision. The surgical procedure however, still requires a dedicated change in lifestyle and exercises to help recover fully. Healthy lifestyle changes will also help you reduce the chance of new atherosclerotic plaque deposits and decrease any risk of stroke.
