- Medications: Medication for pain will be prescribed for you after surgery. Do not take it more frequently than instructed. Stool softener will be prescribed to make stool passage easy. Anti-nausea medication is not typically prescribed but can be if needed.
- Activities: In the first 6 weeks, it is best to avoid heavy housework or lifting, including shopping bags, laundry baskets or vacuuming. Gentle walking is good exercise. Start small and build up gradually as you feel stronger; avoid any type of fitness type training and aerobics, for a minimum of 6 weeks after surgery. Other activities like swimming and intercourse are also to be avoided for 6 weeks after surgery.Generally it is best to take 4 to 6 weeks off from work, this period may extend if you have a very physical or strenuous job.
