The procedure will be done under a general anesthetic. With a general anesthetic, the patient will be sleeping during the procedure. This is an out-patient procedure, usually which means no hospital stay will be involved. The surgeon will then make incisions in the groin and scrotum to bring either one (or both) testicle(s) down into its correct position. The wounds are then with absorbable sutures after the correct placement is done. A catheter (plastic tube) may be used for urine drainage from the bladder. After the surgery, once the scrotal wound heals, the catheter is removed.

Some swelling and bruising of the scrotum is definitely to be expected. This may last for upto several days. There may be haematoma (blood collection) around the testicle which requires surgical removal or resolves slowly by itself. Inadvertent damage to the testicular blood supply could result in atrophy (shrinkage) of your testicle. There may also be chronic testicular or scrotal pain.
